To Retrofit or not...? That is Not the question!

26 Jan 2021

If you can bear it, cast your mind back to the start of 2020 when the new F-gas regulations came into place on the 1st of January 2020.

The new legislation stipulated that refrigeration equipment could not be populated with virgin gas if it has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of over 2500 and with a system that contains refrigerant with 40 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, for example 10 kg of R404A, which is a common HFC refrigerant – this is now illegal.

Fast forward 12 months, and we have now officially left the EU which, whilst unlikely to have any further, major impact from a F-Gas point of view, we may see some smaller additional changes brought into focus.

Updates that you and your teams will no doubt need to be investigating on an on-going basis. An important job, but certainly a challenging task, and not to mention time consuming and costly.

Here at Seward Refrigeration, we make it our business to handle the whole retrofit process leaving you the time to concentrate on other pressing matters.

Our expert team are always looking at the latest legislation and boy, do we know our stuff! We aim to always be on top of any changes and we do what’s needed to support our customers by giving sound advice to help them stay one step ahead.

A huge part of this is ensuring that we work with customers to aide their forward planning. For example, that refrigerant you are currently using, easily accessible and relatively affordable today, but does it fit in within the new guidelines for emissions? And if not, how long will it remain in production? Sure, you can still use it…for now. But at what eventual cost to your maintenance budget and your bottom line?

With a bit of forward planning, we can help you find the right alternatives that meet your needs both now and in the future.

A Retrofit now, could be just the answer!

In the long run you will be saving so much more money, saving your production line downtime, and we all know, downtime costs money.

If you were to suffer a major loss of refrigerant due to a system leak then you could be facing a significant issue (and headache for you) - if the refrigerant you need is no longer available, or so costly it’s not a viable option, then we are here to offer advice on the solutions available to you. If that maybe a retrofit or a replacement system, we will walk you through the whole process and provide the information you require to make an educated evaluation.

Downtime could take several days if not planned properly. At Seward Refrigeration, it’s our mission to make your business run as smooth and as efficiently as possible, so, we will always advise, and project manage your retrofit taking the pressure off you and your team.

“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near one” – care of J.R.R Tolkien.

Hopefully, there are no dragons in your workplace, but it just means that you must identify the risk, in this case, long downtime for your production line, you need to plan!

Why put off until tomorrow what you could do today?

With a large and very experienced design and service team of engineers, we will have your back.
